Precision Imaging Announces the Introduction of Breast Biopsy Services

SEPTEMBER 1, 2007 - Precision Imaging, LLC today announced the introduction of breast biopsy services now available to patients at its 6000 Executive Blvd office in Rockville MD. The new biopsy services follow the introduction of Breast MRI services in October 2006.

An MRI guided biopsy is necessary when a breast MRI scan shows an area in the breast that is suspicious for cancer, but other studies including mammography and ultrasound are not able to find this area so as to target it for biopsy. MRI-guided biopsy of the breast is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that can give a precise diagnosis for a suspicious breast abnormality, without the need for an open surgical biopsy. Using the MRI scanner to pinpoint the abnormality, samples of tissue are removed through a needle and examined under a microscope by a pathologist to detect the presence of cancer or other abnormal cells. A special type of biopsy needle using vacuum-assisted techinique is used at Precision Imaging. This allows for larger tissue samples to be obtained and a much more accurate diagnosis.

"Sometimes MRI is the only test that shows a possible early breast cancer. In these cases we use the MRI scanner and a special breast imaging-biopsy coil to find and target the abnormality," says Dr. Roberto Soto who is the Medical Director and owner of Precision Imaging and is board-certified in both Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. "Although it is possible to mark these abnormalities with a small wire-and-hook device and take the patients to the operating room for an open surgical biopsy of the lesion, it is faster, less invasive, less expensive and much more convenient for the patient to use a needle biopsy instead."

Precision Imaging is one of the few places in Montgomery County where physicians have the equipment and training necessary to perform MRI guided needle biopsies.

"These advances, combined with superior image quality, help to further differentiate Precision as a premier radiology center," says Precision's Practice Manager, Barbara Grimm.

Precision Imaging is a physician-owned and operated diagnostic center that provides access to the latest CT, MRI and PET technology and expertise. All centers accept major insurance plans, as well as Medicare. The Silver Spring site is the third center to be opened by Precision Imaging, LLC since its inception in 2003. In that short time, Dr. Soto has established Precision Imaging as a premier radiology group in the D.C. area.
